Sunday Session - Blur versus Oasis

The great musical rivalries, Beatles vs Stones, Wham vs Duran Duran, NSync vs Backstreet Boys, Take That vs Boyzone - but the one that was most relevant for me, was Blur versus Oasis. I was never in one camp or the other, just got to relish the awesome music that came out of that era.

I love Damon Albarn and thought that Liam Gallagher was a bit of a wanker. I do, however think Noel Gallagher is an amazing writer and it was when I saw him interviewed the other night on Jonathan Ross that I got thinking about the rivalry between these two bands. Of course it was all fuelled by the British tabloid media at the time, and I think Liam may have had a lot to do with stirring the pot too. Jonathan asked Noel is he would ever consider doing  a collaboration with Damon Albarn and he gave a very positive answer - if only - all my 90s dreams realised :o)

Here is a few of my favourite videos:

Sorry for the poor quality and not original vids, all quite heavily copyrighted, but the beauty of these bands is to see them live anyway!

Linking up with Thea as always on a Sunday

Sunday Session - Ear Worms

It's been one of those weeks. We have all had a few days in bed with one bug or another, so there has been a lot of crappy tv and bad music being listened to.

Here are my ear worms for the week.

Master Z is obsessed! "Bob! Bob! Bob!" One of only a handful of words he can say, but boy does he practice it over and over! he also sings the first line in an extremely cute manner :o)

I have just changed back to driving my car after 4 months of driving TBone's. I am getting reacquainted with my Katy Perry CDs. I love this film clip!

We went to a wedding yesterday, a good old country wedding, with great dancing music. Oh, and of course Cold Chisel.

And to leave you with THE most annoying song in my head this week - and I am sure the people sitting in the desks next to me will confirm this - I don't know how these songs make their way into my head - and how do I know the words???? Osmosis has a lot to answer for....

Sorry for the last one - you are singing it now aren't you?? Linking up with Thea at Do I really wanna blog? for her Sunday Session.

Have a great week

Sunday Session - The Sun is Shining!

Yay! It's Sunday! Which means its time to link up with Thea at "Do I really wanna blog?" for her Sunday Session. Head on over to her page to see what others are playing.

It has got up to 36 degrees today here in Perth, so Spring is definitely on us. It has been a stinker of a day, but brings with it the excitement of a long summer. As I looked at songs along the theme of the moon a few weeks ago, I thought today would be a fitting day to choose some songs with a 'sun' theme. Didn't realise there would be so many, but here is a few of my favourites.

My first crush - Morten Harket from A-Ha. I was definitely going to marry him and loved everything about them and their music. Here is "The Sun Always Shines on TV" Sorry about the clip, I couldn't find one that would let me embed.

"Island in the Sun" from Weezer. A really happy, boppy, sunny song. Always puts a smile on my face.

The classic sun song - "Here comes the Sun" from the best band to ever walk the planet, The  Beatles. Sorry about the clip, best I could find.

Soundgarden - "Black Hole Sun" - so pumped they have reformed and will be doing the festival circuit this year.

Another band I had enormous exposure to when living in the UK, The Libertines - "Don't Look Back in to the Sun". One of TBone's favourite bands, so I have grown to love their work by osmosis. I don't like Pete Doherty or Baby Shambles at all, but I love Carl and his side project Dirty Pretty Things - they have disbanded, but check them out if you can.

Enjoy and have a great week.

Sunday Session - The Quickie

I am a bit late joining in with Thea's Sunday Session at Do I Really Wanna Blog?, so I thought I would follow her suggestion for most weeks - an new song and an old song.

One of my favourite songs for 2011 - Architecture in Helsinki's 'Contact High'. They are an awesome Aussie indi band and have a great vibe when playing live.

My oldie is one of my all time favourite songs - but I say that each week of many, many songs :o) - XTC's 'Dear God'

Enjoy, and head over to Thea's page to see what everyone is listening to.

Have a great week.

Sunday Session - Regard the moon - La lune ne garde aucune rancune

Yay it's Sunday! Linking up with Thea at Do I really wanna blog? for her Sunday Session.

This week I have chosen to use the theme of the moon. Mainly because I wanted to put in this song by Echo and the Bunnymen - Killing Moon. Came across it from watching The Lost Boys many, many years ago and have loved it since., Have been fortunate to see them a few times at festivals and this is one of my all time favourite songs.

This next song was in one of the "Sing" books we used to use for music class in primary school- it was before Cat Stevens morphed and I remember loving to sing it in music lessons, 'Moon Shadow'.

The Police - Walking on the moon - nuff said!

And just to bring the 80s in, as I can't help it. This one gets me singing every time. The Waterboys - The Whole of the Moon

Have a great week. Head on over to Thea's page to check out some great Sunday music.

Sunday Session - I'm Blue

Linking in with Thea at Do I really wanna blog? for the Sunday Session. This week Thea's songs have a very pink theme to them - her whole blog has been feeling very pink this week. I thought I would follow her lead and use the colour blue to help with my song selection. Blue is my favourite colour, there is not a shade or tone that doesn't make me feel good inside. This was really hard to narrow down, so I went a bit eclectic with my choices.

First up a song that was never really a favourite, but it was a definite ear worm at the time. It was one of those songs that was played in pubs and clubs for months and months on high rotation. Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee).

Next is a song that brings back memories of our first year living in Leeds in the UK, from the band Blue. They were one of the many boy bands around at the time trying to compete with the success of Take That. They reappeared this year as England's entrant into Eurovision. I am a closet pop lover much to my husband's horror and we really could not escape this song - it stayed in the UK charts for 63 weeks - All Rise.

Trying to regain some sort of credibility after those two, my favourite blue song EVER. New Order - Blue Monday.

I have had to do a fourth song to try to raise the mood after that song, so I have included another song that reminds me of our time in the UK when we were heavily into the White Stripes and anything that Jack White was touching. Blue Orchid from their 2005 album Get Behind Me Satan.

Head on over to Thea's page for some more awesome Sunday Music.
Have a great week.

Sunday Session - the 21st edition

Last night, we attended my cousin's 21st birthday. So as I link up with Thea's Sunday Session, I thought it would be a good excuse to revisit some music from the year he was born - 1990. (Anything to get the 90s on my blog!)

The top selling single in Australia that year was Sinead O'Connor's 'Nothing Compares 2 U' - but that is way too whingy for me, so first up is B52s 'Love Shack' - came in at number 10 even though it was released in 1989.

One of my favourite grungy bands is Faith No More, and this one of their first hits, but it was still before they were a commercial success - 'Epic'.

1990 was the year of Roxette's 'It Must Have Been Love', Jon Bon Jovi's 'Blaze of Glory', Aerosmith's 'Janie's got a Gun' , New Kid's on the Block's 'Step by Step' and Milli Vanilli's 'Blame it on the Rain'.
But on the non-commercial stations, there was some amazing sounds starting to evolve. It was the year before Nirvana's 'Smell's Like Teen Spirit'and the grunge explosion. The west coast of America had many emerging bands with dirty guitars, and a black view of the world. Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and SoundGarden were all in a garage somewhere on the brink of something pretty amazing in music history.

Next song is Andy Prieboy's 'Tomorrow Wendy' - such a haunting song.

That song makes me cry, so, to lighten the mood - my favourite song from 1990. Still a favourite, feel good song - and I love the film clip, always makes me smile and bop along - They Might be Giants 'Birdhouse in your Soul'.

Surely that got you smiling :o) Have a great week!

Sunday Session

Linking in with Thea at Do I really Wanna Blog? for today's Sunday session.  Head on over to check it out.

Many, many earworms this week and some blasts from the past. I decided to do a very 90s Sunday Session. I am pretty much stuck in the nineties when it comes to music. I love guitars, I love grunge.

First up is Breeders, Cannonball. Loved it in the nineties, love it now!

Next up is Veruca Salt, Seether - I love heavy, guitar centric songs sung by powerful women.

And finally, Pearl Jam's Betterman. My favourite band of the nineties. Enjoy and have a great week!

Sunday Session

Linking in again with Thea at Do I really wanna Blog? for the Sunday Session.

This week has been super busy and as always, the music running through my head has been varied.

For some inane reason, The Gambler has been at the forefront. I am not really a Kenny Roger's fan, I don't really even know the song, I have just had a few lines stuck in my head. I think I probably learnt it by osmosis from my parents record collection. So you have to suffer too!

The other song that has invaded my headspace has been Adele's Rolling in the Deep. It is everywhere at the moment due to its use in the latest series of Channel 9's Underbelly: Razor. I love Adele and I love this song. I was at a Hen's Party yesterday and this was played pretty much every 30 minutes in the bus. Love it!

Now for a quick retro, one of my favorite Creedence Songs, "Down on the Corner".

Have a great week everyone

Sunday Session

Thought I would do something different today and link in with Thea's Sunday session at Do I really Wanna Blog?

I love music, our life is full of music and our house has very eclectic tastes. I love nothing more than watching Master Z 'dancing' to the radio. His favourite is Copperhead Road from Steve Earle - not a song I like, but a certain radio station I sometimes listen to as I know all the words to all the songs, plays it every day!!! He enjoys it as he can stamp his feet on the floorboards throughout.

I am more a Triple J girl, desperately clinging to my youth. This week, I heard some awesome songs that took me back to the nineties when life was so simple. Mike Mills, a well known director and graphic artist was on Zan Rowe's morning show on Friday and played 5 songs that he has been involved in some how. My favorite of these was Sonic Youth's Diamond Sea - but the radio friendly version, not their usual 17 minute prog rock version. Mike did the cover art to Sonic Youths' album 'Washing Machine' that this song came from.

Second song I chose, is Blind Melon's No Rain as it was part of a mash on Spicks and Specks  and again flashed me back to my uni days - haven't thought about this song for ages, buts its a cute little catchy tune that reminds me of summer.

What songs have caught your ears this week?
